The Transmission Area Zagreb carries out the transmission activity in the area of 11 counties: Zagreb, Karlovac, Sisak-Moslavina, Bjelovar-Bilogora, Koprivnica-Križevac, Međimurje, Varaždin, and Krapina-Zagorje counties and partly in Virovitica-Podravina, Požega-Slavonia and Slavonski Brod- Posavina counties. The distribution areas in these counties area: Elektra Zagreb, Elektra Karlovac, Elektra Sisak, Elektra Križ, Elektra Virovitica, Elektra Bjelovar, Elektra Koprivnica, Elektra Čakovec, Elektra Varaždin, Elektra Zabok and Elektra Slavonski Brod.
The Transmission Area Zagreb covers different terrains in geographical, climatic and economic sense: it spreads from the mountainous, less populated and developed areas of Lika, through the lowlands of western Slavonia to the gentle hills of northwestern Croatia, including the capital, Zagreb, which represents the economic, geopolitical and cultural center with more than 17 percent of the country’s population. Such a large and diverse territory, in organizational and technical sense, imposes very high requirements for operation and maintenance of the power system.
During the Homeland War, the 400/110/30 kV Tumbri substation and the 220/110/10 kV Mraclin substation suffered considerable damage. Due to the exceptional significance of these substations for the Croatian power system, the damages were repaired immediately.
The Transmission Area Zagreb employs 333 people. It covers about 20,864 km2, which is about 37 percent of the national territory, with a share of about 45 percent in the total electricity consumption and peak load of the Croatian power system. The Area is responsible for 2.666,7 km of high voltage lines and 39 high voltage substations, the total installed capacity of which is 4.056 MVA (60 transformers and 292 circuit breaker bays).
The Area transmission network is connected with Hungary, Slovenia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina through eight high voltage lines. The availability of the Area transmission network ensures safe transmission of electricity from three hydo power plants located in the Drava River basin and from Gojak hydro power plant, four thermal power plants and the nuclear power plant Krško. The production achieved in 2005 was 6,2 TWh. Electricity consumption was 7,0 TWh, with the annual increase of 2,9 percent, and the transit through the Area was 5,7 TWh. The peak load in 2005 was 1,3 GW, with an upward trend.
By constructing and putting into operation the 400/220/110 kV Žerjavinec substation and reconnecting UCTE synchronous zones 1 and 2, the security of supply to the city of Zagreb and the entire Croatian power system has been significantly improved.
